Special Species
An installation for Adoration and ArtPrize Grand Rapids. MI 2011
This work was part public performance and part sculptural installation. At the beginning of the event I gave glass flameworking /lampworking deminstrations In full view of the public. The performance and installation took place in VandenBerg (Calder) Plaza and the glass plants, made using some of the same techniques demonstrated, were installed around the plaza in subtle and unexpected places. This work combined the traditional role of the carnival flameworker with the role of the artist naturalist and utilized QR code technology to access information immediately relevant to the .installation.
I used Michigan State University's special plants list (http://mnfi.anr.msu.edu/data/specialplants.cfm) as a resource for this installation.
